"Work, work..."
25 10 2005Do you remember those Orc workers from WarCraft III? Well, I feel like one of them today. Spent the afternoon looking at a shell script meant to safely restart services when they triggered certain treshold values like process number and memory usage. Which is a questionable thing in general, and a sure sign of either badly misconfigured or broken server software, if you care to ask me.
Anyway, it's amazing how many bugs some people manage to squeeze into so few lines of code. They even dared to feed a cronjob with it. Which of course did not do what they expected it to do, but something else instead. And I wondered where all these dangling processes came from, oh my... I mean, I'm not the King of Coders, really. And I'm not too proud of what I write. Most of the time I'm glad if ItJustWorks™. But at least I try to debug my scripts before I release them in the wild a production environment! Of course it all ended with me rewriting the damn thing from scratch, which in turn took a bit longer than expected.
