Sil53r Surf3r updated

30 10 2005

As I've already predicted on Friday, this Blog runs Serendipity 0.9 now. The update went smoothly and with only minor adjustments necessary, most of which were due to my previous tampering with the internals. Installing nightly snapshots from the Subversion project repository at BerliOS without updating the MySQL Database at one go might have very well led to more troubles than just missing categories. I guess it was another of these "don't poke your hands into the cog-wheels if you don't know what you're doing" things. In fact it's a bit strange I did this in the first place and let it run with a broken config for so long, but maybe the high diligence I tend to put into tasks at work leads to a more casual approach in my spare time. Not that I'd like to expand that.

Anyway, everything is in place again and working. Categories are back, even with descriptions (which I still have to enter), the Gravatar plugin has an ability to cache the images now, I've reinstalled all additional plugins and fixed the layout. And the last two pages are now valid XHTML again, shame on me. But there's still a lot of other things to do, even without that. I have to check more than a dozen draft articles and above all things the blogroll. There are dead links on it, I know. And more important still, maybe some people I don't like to read anymore.

With all the new features, Serendipity 0.9 is simply cool! I've noticed an overall speed improvement with this release, and so should the readers. So, if you'd like to start a weblog and have not yet decided on which software to use, you should definitely give it a try. Or go to supersized.org and start a Serendipity driven weblog there. You won't regret it, I promise!

A special word of praise to the whole Serendipity developer team for making an already fine piece of software even better. Keep up the good work! I can only repeat. Without your effort this weblog wouldn't have started in the first place, and it's definitely due to Serendipity's ease of use and overall quality that it is still existant. Because it's fun to work with it. And since when do you hear anyone put the words "fun" and "work" together in one sentence?
